Las Lajas-Costa Rican

A Family Farm

Click here to watch a video about the Las Lajas, A Family FarmIn the Central Valley of Costa Rica, on the slopes of the Poas Volcano, is a small family estate that grows the finest organic coffee in the country. Las Lajas is owned and operated by Oscar and Francisca Chacon and their family. Las Lajas has been operated by the Chacon family for more than 80 years, with the third generation of coffee farmers being raised on the farm right now.

Las Lajas, A Family FarmThis farm is located at around 1200 meters elevation, and is one of a small hand full of Certified Organic Coffee farms in Costa Rica. Because of the premium that is paid for coffees from Costa Rica, it is rare to find farmers willing to sacrifice yield to follow organic growing procedures, but the Chacon’s have been growing organically for nearly 30 years.

ILas Lajas, A Family Farmn 1980 after the tragic loss of their father due to pesticide caused illness, Oscar and Francisca made the daring decision to do what their hearts told them was best for their family and start growing organically. This decision was a difficult one to make because at the time there was no premium paid for organics, but the concern for their family’s health would not allow the continuing use of chemicals.

Through the years the Chacon’s have not only paid attention to responsible growing practices but they have also placed great emphasis on producing a coffee of the highest quality. Recently, their attention to detail and their dedication to properly carrying out the many meticulous steps to producing an amazing tasting coffee have earned them international attention.

Las Lajas, A Family FarmIn 2008 and 2009 the Chacon’s submitted their coffees into a competition called Cup of Excellence. In this competition coffees from across Costa Rica are assessed for their cup quality and uniqueness of flavor. The Chacon’s placed in the top 25 out of over 600 coffees two years in a row. In addition their coffee was the highest ranked organic coffee in the country.

The Las Lajas is available at all of our locations to purchase in whole bean 12 oz. bags. It is also on rotation with our other Unity Project coffees on tap in each sit-down location. So please enjoy the fine cup of coffee that the Chacon family has been perfecting for 80 years with us!

It takes a TEAM to be Successful

Nadine Ontiveros, Our fearless Store Manger and Manager Mentor, Steve CrnKovich, Lead Manager of our Durango Drive-Thru and Assistant Manager of our Wal-Mart Plaza Location, and me Joe Lloyd.

Originally Durango Joe’s Coffee was established by myself and my wife LeAnna in 2004 with a dream of opening a chain of coffee shops. Throughout the past 6 years, however, we have had many different people who have helped to shape our business with their creativity, passion and insight. Durango Joe’s would not be what it is today with out the many people who have given of themselves to help make it stronger.

We have called our coffee “Legendary” because  I have a legendary family history in Durango as rich and memorable as the coffee we serve.

My Grandfather,  Durango’s own Doctor Leo Lloyd served the Durango community for over 40 years in family medicine, beloved for his day and night dedication to home bedside care, he set the family’s “community first” mission in the early 1930’s. My brother, Leo Lloyd III has been known throughout the Four Corners for over 25 years as the “go to” guy for dangerous search and rescue missions and serves as a Captain for the Durango Fire Department. My passion, besides serving great coffee is being a community leader and local charity advocate. I’m  proud to share the family spirit of exceptional service and I pride myself self as being the most caring independent coffee presence in the area.

Ultimately the success of Durango Joe’s rests in our ability to go above and beyond to please each customer who either walks in or drives thru. It is our belief that ALL people are important. That is why we make it a priority to go out of our way to make a positive difference in each person’s day. Everyone deserves a smile, a warm greeting, and a great cup of coffee.

Mary Francis, College Dr. Manager, who has put up with me for 4 years! Even when I ham it up!

LeAnna and I feel blessed and at times overwhelmed at the wonderful team of co-workers we have that surrounded and supported the ultimate mission of our company.  Without a good team and support staff,  none of the success and good fortune would be possible.

To all my family and wonderful staff that continues to believe in me and the mission we live by each day, I am extremely grateful and each day I thank God for ALL the committed individuals to whom the true success of this company lies.  Go TEAM!

Mark Stroup, my Business Partner and Vice President of Operations and his wife Ashley Stroup, who is our General Sales Manager and oversees one of our locations along with their sweet baby girl Elise.

20 Years and Counting…

09 Aug

“Twenty years”. Wow, that sounds like a lot of time.

This summer, LeAnna and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. I can’t believe how fast 20 years went by and I’m left wondering, what the heck just happened? As LeAnna and I reflect on our journey,  we feel genuinely blessed. Reminiscing back to the first time we met, our wedding day,  and those unforgettable moments when both of our wonderful children were born- it’s been a great journey. In those 20 years we have had our share of UP’S and DOWN’S, but at the end of the day we know that we know it’s only by God’s grace we have made it through.

We decided that it would be fitting to renew our vows with some of our family and close friends present.  So on June 26th, in the beautiful state of Oregon, we renewed our commitment to each other and promised once again to spend the rest of our lives together as husband and wife.  The cool part about the ceremony was that Caleb, my 15 year old son was my best man and Kirsten, our beautiful 12 year old daughter, was LeAnna’s maid of honor.  After the ceremony LeAnna and I jumped on a plane, (left both kids with the in-laws) and headed to Puerto Vallarta for a second honeymoon. These unforgettable moments will be treasured for years to come.

I guess my only hope is that the next 20 years I take a little more time to enjoy the journey and not spend most of it working so hard… Like that will happen!

A Decaf Latte — Why Bother?!

06 Aug

For years I’ve refused to drink decaffeinated coffee.

It has just never made sense to me why people would want to drink coffee without caffeine in it, why bother?  The ad on the right pretty much summed up my sentiments. You drink coffee for the taste and the immediate energy boost.  In my early twenties and thirties I could easily down a 4 shot latte an hour before bed and without any problem I would sleep like a baby all night long. However, as I slowly approached the dreaded age of 40, I started to loose my caffeine edge and I begin to experience some long sleepless nights after downing the caffeine dose I was accustomed to drinking without consequence. But still I refused to drink decaf for fear of compromising the great taste of caffeinated coffee! DECAF COFFEE — No Way!

I must admit, however reluctantly, that the pain of not sleeping all night became too great and I was forced to experiment with decaf coffees. At the time, I had owned and operated Durango Joe’s Coffee for 2 years, so I’m little embarrassed to say that I was just then diving into the quality of decaf coffees.  But, what I found was great news! It actually tasted GOOD! Who would have thought?  I could experience the same wonderful flavor and taste I had come to love and enjoy drinking my favorite caffeinated coffee in select decaf blends. Here is what I found out about decaf coffee:

How is coffee decaffeinated?

Coffee is decaffeinated in it’s unroasted or green state. Currently two processes dominate the specialty coffee industry, The Swiss Water Process and the European process.

In layman’s terms, the “Swiss Water Process” (copyrighted name of course) involves soaking the beans in hot water until they’ve given up everything but the woody structure, running the waters through charcoal filters to remove the caffeine, then recombining the beans and the water. The beans soak up the good stuff from the water again, leaving the caffeine behind in the filters. This is the greenest option while also allowing the beans to maintain as much flavor as possible. (For more depth on this process visit, coffeereview.com)

The European process involves the use of a solvent (methylene chloride, usually) which combines with the caffeine. The caffeine is simply removed and the rest of the beans flavor characteristics are  left intact instead of having the majority taken out and then put back in, as in the Swiss Water Process.

We have always and continue to carry Swiss Water Processed Decaf as I believe it is the best choice for our customer’s and environment’s well-being.

How to select decaffeinated coffee:

When buying decaffeinated coffees, pay attention to roast levels.  Decaffeinated coffees are typically tricky to roast as they respond inconsistently to heat. Avoid decaffeinated coffees that look extremely dark and oily, particularly if the store you are buying them from doesn’t usually present it’s coffees that way. In other words, decaffeinated coffee is easy to over roast, and you’ll be tasting more of the “over-roasting” than the coffee’s flavors  if you aren’t careful.

A great alternative,  if you are looking for ways to reduce your caffeine intake without giving up coffee or sacrificing taste is to drink half or quarter-caff. coffees. At home, experiment with blending regular coffees naturally low in caffeine with a decaffeinated coffee to create your own favorite low-caffeine coffee. Coffees that have a higher roast level contain the least amount of caffeine. Try mixing one part of a distinctive, full-bodied regular arabica coffee such as our Tanzanian or Guatemalan with two parts of a mild decaffeinated coffee such as Costa Rican or Colombian. The resulting blend will have 80- 85% less caffeine per cup! Our Decaf Espresso and Rio Azul Guatemalan makes an excellent pairing!

Or if you’re on the go,  come into any one of our 7 Durango Joe’s coffee shops and ask for a half-caff. coffee, you’ll get the same great taste without the jolt!

My current favorite: A double decaf espresso shot over ice with a

splash of cream.
